Nature’s toothbrush: raw meaty bones.
The first time we gave our dogs a raw bone to eat whole, I think I held my breath the whole time (okay maybe not the whole time). Growing up you learn to NOT “throw a dog a bone”. While this is true for cooked bones, raw meaty bones (RMBs) are the main source of calcium for raw eaters and noticeably improve their teeth, gums and breath.
Raw meaty bones that our dogs have enjoyed include:
Necks (duck, turkey, lamb)
Beef knuckle bones
Wings (chicken, duck)
Feet (chicken, duck)
Beef trachea
Sourcing Raw Meaty Bones
We usually find raw meaty bones at our local grocery store or an Asian market. You can make friends with the butcher and let them know to save some RMBs. Also, around Thanksgiving season, ask your family and friends to save the RAW turkey necks in a bag for you too!
Better Paws also offers Bone Bundles with a variety of raw bones.
Feeding Raw Meaty Bones
Always, ALWAYS supervise your pet when they’re eating an RMB. We give our dogs RMBs outside or on a mat to reduce the mess. It’s actually very cool to see your pet tap into their primal instincts and know you don’t have to tackle them to brush their teeth any time soon.
We use bones as a topper or treat and like knowing Penny and Ollie never miss out on calcium because their Albright’s Complete includes bone and eggshell!
